1ST READING. IS 42: 1-7. PSALM. 27. GOSPEL. JN 12:1-11.
THEME: MARY’S ANOINTING OF JESUS
INTRODUCTION
The highest duty of man according to St Alphonsus is found in the Worship of God and the Love of neighbor. In today’s Gospel, we see a woman named Mary demonstrating to us the path of man’s nobility. In her anointing of Jesus, we see a soul, he recognizes her unworthiness to have Jesus in her midst. In her action, we also see a soul worshipping her God. She recognized Jesus as her Messiah and Saviour. Her worship of Jesus flowed from Love. She demonstrated this love and her respect for Jesus by washing and cleaning the legs of Jesus with her hairs. She was not ashamed of the presence of people. She was simply in love with her Master. This action, also demonstrates to us the path we are to follow. The path of Humility, the path of Adoration and Worship, the path of love and service.
When a soul yearns for God like Mary in today’s Gospel, such a soul will be satisfied. In Mary’s action, we see our greatest task which is the worship of God.
Yes, Mary has demonstrated to us the path we should follow. She has shown to us that we must recognize who we are mere creatures. We are created to serve God and love our neighbors. This is being fulfilled in Mary’s Anointing of Jesus.
While in the first reading, we are presented with the mission of Christ. The one who came to bring justice and uprightness to Nations and to humanity. Jesus is the one appointed as Covenant of the people. Appointed to bring light and salvation to the Nations. Appointed to free captives from prison and bring conversion to sinners.
Jesus, fulfilled this role on the Cross of Calvary. We have a duty to imitate Mary. We have a duty to anoint Jesus, not with ordinary anointment but with faith, hope and love. We have a duty like Mary to adore Jesus. We have a duty to humble ourselves in the service of Jesus. We have a duty to care for Jesus in our neighbors especially those who are sick, poor, vulnerable and suffering. Yes, we have a noble and glorious duty to wait on Jesus and love him in our neighbors.
