The gospel reading today teaches us about the resurrection of the dead. The belief in the resurrection of the dead is a foundational tenet of Christian faith, rooted in the promise of life after death through the power of God (1 Cor. 15:12-19). The resurrection of the dead holds profound significance for believers, offering hope, redemption, and eternal life in the presence of God. Preparation for the resurrection entails living in accordance with God’s will, fostering spiritual growth, and anticipating the fulfillment of God’s promises. The Lord made it clear today that God is a God of the living and all are alive before him. This is why God is called Father of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. The resurrection of the dead is thus confirmed by the Master. In this reflection we shall highlight why there is resurrection and how to prepare for the resurrection.
Reasons for the Resurrection of the Dead
First, hope in Christ’s Resurrection. The resurrection of Jesus Christ serves as the cornerstone of Christian faith, demonstrating victory over sin, death, and the grave. Believers share in this victory through the promise of resurrection (1 Cor. 15:20-22).
Second, fulfillment of God’s Promises. Throughout the scriptures, God’s promises of resurrection and eternal life are affirmed, assuring believers that death is not the end but a transition to an everlasting existence in God’s presence (Jn. 11:25-26). The Lord is faithful to his promises. The Lord told us that there are many mansion in his Father’s house (Jn. 14:1-2).
Third, transformation and redemption. The resurrection of the dead signifies a transformation of our mortal bodies into imperishable, glorified bodies, free from sin, suffering, and decay, reflecting God’s redemptive plan for creation (1 Cor. 15:42-44). This is why it is imperative there must be the resurrection of the body. The human being is made up of both physical and spiritual nature.
How To Prepare for the Resurrection
First, faith in Christ. We should cultivate a deep, abiding faith in Jesus Christ as the source of salvation, resurrection, and eternal life. Live in accordance with Christ’s teachings, embracing His love, grace, and redemptive work (Jn. 6:40). The Master told us, I am the resurrection and the life (Jn. 11:28).
Second, we should strive for a life of holiness and righteousness and obedience to God’s commandments. Seek repentance, forgiveness, and transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit, purifying your heart and life (1 Thes. 4:7-8). Without holiness no one can see the Lord (Heb. 12:14).
Third, we should engage in acts of compassion, service, and love towards others, reflecting Christ’s selfless example of sacrificial love. The way of charity and love is the way to heaven. We should demonstrate kindness, generosity, and mercy in our interactions with others (Mt. 25:34-36). We are going to be judged on the basis of charity on the last day. When I was hungry you gave me food (Mt. 25:35).
Fourth, we should prepare for the resurrection through endurance and perseverance. Endure trials, challenges, and suffering with faith, perseverance, and hope in the resurrection. The apostle James tells us to count it all joy when we go through all kinds of trials (James 1:2-4). We should trust in God’s faithfulness, sovereignty, and promises, knowing that present sufferings are temporary (Rom. 8:18). We should never give up doing good because of challenges and difficulties.
Fifth, we should stay vigilant, alert, and prepared for the return of Christ and the resurrection of the dead. Live with expectation, readiness, and anticipation of the final fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan (Mt. 24:42-44). In other words, we should be ready at all times because the Master can come anytime.
Sixth, we should always fix our eyes on the eternal realities of the resurrection and the heavenly home. We should focus on Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Saviour. The scripture has this to say, “Let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us, while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith” (Heb. 12:2). These are some of the means through which we can prepare for the resurrection.
