We celebrate today the Solemnity of Jesus Christ as the universal king. The theological concept of Jesus Christ as King is rooted in Scripture and Christian tradition, emphasizing His sovereignty, authority, and lordship over all creation. The title of King attributed to Jesus reflects His divine nature, Messianic role, and role as the ruler of God’s kingdom. Understanding Jesus as King highlights His preeminence, majesty, and power in redeeming humanity, establishing His kingdom, and fulfilling God’s plan of salvation.
Theological Background on Jesus Christ as King
First, the Messianic Prophecies.The Old Testament prophesied the coming of a Messianic King who would reign in righteousness, establish justice, and fulfill God’s covenant promises (Isaiah 9:6-7, Zechariah 9:9).
Second, Jesus is Son of God. Jesus’ identity as the Son of God affirms His divine nature and authority as King over all creation, symbolizing His unique relationship with the Father and His role in God’s redemptive plan (Col. 1:15-20, Hebrews 1:8).
Third, his victory over Sin and Death. Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus conquered sin, death, and the powers of darkness, demonstrating His victory and authority as the triumphant King (1 Cor. 15:54-57, Rev. 1:18).
Fourth, his Coronation and Enthronement. After His resurrection and ascension, Jesus was exalted to the right hand of God, crowned as King of kings and Lord of lords, reigning in glory and power (Acts 2:33-36, Eph. 1:20-21).
Why Jesus is a King
First, Divine Authority. Jesus possesses divine authority as the Son of God, reflecting His role as the eternal King who rules with righteousness, love, and justice over God’s kingdom (Matt. 28:18, Rev. 19:16).
Second, Saviour and Redeemer. By redeeming humanity through His sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus established His Kingship through the victory over sin and death, offering salvation and eternal life to all who believe in Him (John 18:36-37, Rom. 14:9).
Third, Universal Dominion. Jesus’ Kingship extends over all creation, including spiritual realms, earthly powers, and the hearts of believers, affirming His authority as the sovereign ruler who will reign in glory for eternity (Phil. 2:9-11, Rev. 5:13).
How to Respond to His Kingship.
First, acknowledge His Sovereignty. Recognize and acknowledge Jesus as the sovereign King over your life, submitting to His authority, will, and lordship with humility and reverence. We should surrender and submit to his reign over our hearts and the world (James 4:7; Rom. 12:1).
Second, daily devotion and prayer. We should cultivate a lifestyle of devotion, prayer, and intimacy with Christ, seeking His presence, guidance, and wisdom in all aspects of our lives, Commune with Him daily, aligning your heart with His will and seeking His kingdom first (Matt. 6:33, Col. 4:2).
Third, loyalty and allegiance. We can respond to the kingship of Christ by remaining faithful, loyal, and steadfast in our allegiance to the Kingship of Christ, standing firm in our faith, even in the face of challenges, opposition, or adversity. Trust in His faithfulness and promises, knowing that He is a faithful King (1 Cor. 15:58, 1 Peter 1:5).
Fourth, through obedience and Servanthood. We should demonstrate our love for Christ by obeying His commands, serving others in humility, and following His example of servant leadership. Reflect His love, compassion, and grace in your interactions with others, embodying His character in your daily life (John 14:15, Mark 10:45). This is a powerful means of honoring the kingship of Christ.
Fifth, through proclamation and Witness. When we share the message of Christ’s Kingship, grace, and salvation with others through our words, actions, and lifestyle, we are honoring his reign over us. We should always bear witness to His transformative power, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and inviting others to experience His love and grace (Matt. 28:18-20, Acts 1:8).
Sixth, we should respond to the kingship of Christ by living a life of faith, hope and love. In other words, becoming men and women of virtue and integrity. When we put our faith and hope in Jesus Christ and love one another, we demonstrate that we believe in his kingship over our lives. These are some of the ways we can respond to the kingship of Christ.
