1st<\/sup> reading. Heb. 4:12-16. Psalm. 19. Gospel. Mk 2:13-17<\/p>\n\n\n\nTheme: The Call Of Sinners<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs he passed by, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus, sitting at the customs post. He said to him, Follow me.\u201d For the Jews, every task collector is a public sinner. Jesus, who came for the salvation of sinner was not restricted and deterred by the fact that Levi is a task collector. The Lord extended his invitation by calling Levi to become his follower. The scribes and the Pharisees, complained that Jesus was eating with sinners. In his response, the Lord, told them, those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners. In the first reading, the scriptures tell us that the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. The Spirit of God led Jesus, in giving top priority for the repentance and conversion of souls. This is why the Master does not joke with his mandate of saving sinners. Like Jesus Christ, we too have a duty to search out for sinners who truly need the message of Jesus Christ. Jesus calls sinners because His mission is to save, heal, and reconcile humanity to God. This concept is central to the Christian faith and is supported by numerous passages of the scriptures. We shall highlight why Jesus calls sinners and how we should follow the example of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why Jesus Call Sinners<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First, Jesus Came to Save Sinners. This is the principal reason for the incarnation of the Word of God. Jesus’ mission was to redeem humanity from sin and offer forgiveness. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19:10). The apostle Paul has this to say, “This is a trustworthy saying, deserving full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” (1 Timothy 1:15).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Second, God’s Love and Mercy is at the call of sinners by Jesus Christ. The love of God is so overwhelming that He sent his only begotten Son to redeem humanity. The scripture has this to say, for God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God’s love is unconditional, extending to everyone, including sinners. The scriptures has this to say, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.” (John 3:17)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Third, Jesus came to call sinners to repentance. The Lord invites sinners to repent and turn back to God, leading to transformation and restoration. The Master himself has this to say, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:32). The public ministry of Jesus started with the message, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Matthew 4:17).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fourth, another reason why Jesus calls sinners is because of God’s Desire for Restoration. God desires to restore broken relationships and bring people into His kingdom. The scripture has this to say, “There is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” (Luke 15:7). For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, says the Lord. (Mat. 9:13).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fifth, God’s Patience and Inclusivity. The Lord God gives everyone an opportunity to repent and experience His grace. The apostle Peter tells us, “The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How to Call Sinners<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sharing in the mission of calling sinners like Jesus involves embodying His love, compassion, and truth while reaching out to those who are far from God. Here are practical ways we can carry out this awesome responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First, we can begin by preaching the Good News of the Kingdom of heaven. The Master entrusted this noble task to each and every one of us.(Mt 28:19-20). The Lord Jesus began His mission by preaching repentance and the Kingdom of God (Mark 1:15). The apostle Paul spoke boldly on the need to proclaim the kingdom in the following words, \u201cproclaim the word; be persistent, whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching.\u201d (2 Tim 4:2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Second, show compassion and love. Teaching and preaching gain more strength when we back it up with compassion and love. Action speaks louder than words, this is why, as God\u2019s ministers, we should be conscious of our identity and become men and women of charity and love. The Master himself often interacted with sinners with compassion rather than condemnation, showing them God\u2019s love. The story of the woman caught in adultery is very instructive. Jesus forgave the woman and encouraged her to go and sin no more. (Jn 8:10-11). Jesus was criticized for welcoming sinners and eating with them, showing His willingness to build relationships with the lost. (Lk 15:1-2). This is the pathway we should follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Third, we should lead by example. Living a life of integrity and holiness can attract others to Christ. Our actions can testify to the transformative power of God. The Master told us, \u201clet your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”(Mt 5:16). The apostle Peter has a similar message for us, “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God.”(1Peter 2:12)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fourth, we should pray for the conversion of sinners. The holy Spirit is the agent of repentance and conversion. This is why praying for one another is very important in the mission of calling sinners to repentance. Prayer is a powerful way to intercede for those who are far from God and to ask for opportunities to share the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The apostle Paul has this words of exhortation for us, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people… This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”(1 Tim 2:1-4). The Master himself prayed for those who crucified Him, saying, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”(Lk 23:34).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fifth, we should be patient with fellow sinners and do not judge them. Instead of condemning others, we should offer grace, as Jesus did, to lead them toward repentance. The apostle Paul tells us, “Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God\u2019s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?” (Rom. 2:4). The scripture has this to say, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”(Mt 7:1-2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sixth, we should seek out the Lost. Jesus actively sought sinners, illustrating the importance of intentional outreach. “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(Lk 19:10). The parable of the lost sheep shows Jesus’ commitment to bringing back even one lost soul.(Mt 18:12-14). We should emulate the example of Jesus, who searches for sinners to bring them to the kingdom of heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seventh, we should speak the Truth in Love. In other words, we should courageously denounce a life of sin and debauchery in charity. We should let sinners know the consequences of remaining in sin with remorse and contrition. We should remind fellow sinners that God is merciful and just at the same time. This is the time of mercy, when the Master comes again, it is the time of judgment. (Mt 25:31-46). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prayers<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lord, help us to be mindful of our mission of calling sinners to repentance. Lord, give us the zeal to proclaim your kingdom of love and righteousness. Lord, help us to identify with fellow sinners. Lord, give us the grace to remain faithful. Lord, please, sustain us till the very end. Amen. Wishing you a fruitful weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
