Heb 2:14-18. Psalm 105. Gospel. Mk 1:29-39

Theme: Prayer and Ministry

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus created time early in the morning to be alone with God in prayers. Long before dawn, he woke up to pray (Mk 1:35). This practice of combining ministry and prayer is very important for sustainability in the call to follow Christ. Combining ministry and prayer is essential in the Christian life as it aligns our actions with God’s will, invites His presence and power into our service, fosters spiritual growth and discernment, and allows us to be guided by the holy Spirit in ministering to others. By integrating prayer and ministry, believers demonstrate a reliance on God’s strength, wisdom, and direction, recognizing the importance of seeking His guidance and empowerment in all aspects of service and outreach. In this reflection, we shall highlight why we should combine prayer and ministry and how to combine prayer and ministry.

Why We Should Combine Prayer and Ministry

First, by combining prayer and ministry, we acknowledge our dependence on God’s guidance, provision and strength, recognizing that apart from Him, we can do nothing of lasting spiritual significance. The Master told us, I am the vine, you are the branches, cut off from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5; Phil 4:6).

Second, prayer cultivate spiritual discernment, clarity, and wisdom in ministry, enabling us to discern God’s will, hear his voice, and respond obediently to his leading in serving others effectively.( James 1:5; Prov. 3:5-6).

Third, a life of prayer also empower us for ministry by inviting the Holy Spirit to work through us, equipping us with spiritual gifts, boldness, and compassion to minister to those in need, share the Gospel, and demonstrate God’s love (Acts 1:8; 1 Cor 12:4-11).

Fourth, prayer enable us to intercede for others, lifting their needs, burdens, and concern before God, and petitioning Him for healing, provision, guidance, and transformation in their lives. (1 Tim.2:1; Phil.4:6).

Fifth, keeping alive a balanced combination of prayer and ministry lead to spiritual vitality, intimacy with God, and a sensitivity to His presence, leading to a deeper relationship with Him and a greater impact in serving others (Eph. 6:18, Col 4:2).

Sixth, a life of prayer in the ministry leads to unity among believers, it helps to bring about common understanding and harmony. It is capable of drawing believers closer and intimate friendship in the ministry. it unifies hearts and mind, foster oneness, love and cooperation in ministry, creating a community driven by a shared commitment to prayer and service. (Mt 18:19-20; Acts 2:42). These are some of the reasons why we should cultivate a life of prayer in the ministry.

How to Combine Prayer and Ministry

Combining prayers and ministry involves integrating prayer into every aspect of service, seeking God’s guidance, wisdom, and empowerment in all activities, and allowing the holy Spirit to lead and direct our efforts for His glory. By practicing a lifestyle of prayerful ministry, believers can cultivate a deeper relationship with God, align their actions with His will, and experience His presence, power and transformation in their service to others. These are some of the ways we can combine prayer with the ministry.j

First, we should begin every ministry with prayerful preparation. In other words, following the example of Jesus Christ, who went to the desert for forty days in preparation for his public ministry. Before we begin a ministry, we ought to wait in prayer, seeking divine wisdom and discernment from the Lord. When we begin our ministry with prayer, we prepare ourselves for fruitfulness because of the presence of the Lord.

Second, we should not only pray for our own success in the ministry, we should also pray for those we minister to for positive response and openness to the prompting of the Spirit. We should pray for their needs and situation that God may favour them through our ministration. We should pray that the holy Spirit may open their hearts for repentance and conversion. It is the holy Spirit, who bring about the conversion of souls. This is why, it is extremely important to pray for the people. (James 5:16; Eph 6:18).

Third, we need to practice silence and recollection as an essential means of communicating with God. We should practice listening prayer, allowing the Lord to speak to us. This is a beautiful means through which we can combine prayer and ministry activities. We should not be too busy to create time to be alone with Jesus Christ. The Master himself did it regularly. After ministering to the people, he goes off to be alone with his heavenly Father.(Lk 5:16; Mk 1:35).

Fourth, we should cultivate the habit of inviting the holy Spirit to work through us. This is very important, because, we cannot bear good fruits without the assistance of the holy Spirit. The holy Spirit will enable us to minister with compassion and love for souls. Through the influence and activities of the holy Spirit, we can become great instruments in the hands of God.(Gal 5:22-23; Acts 1:8).

Fifth, we should also seek God’s will through meditation on the scriptures and prayers. The word of God will enable us to know the will of God for us. This will enable us to align our actions, and attitudes with His purpose, values and character, and submitting to His leading in all aspects of ministry (Prov. 3:16; Mt.6:10).

Sixth, we should integrate prayer into the ministry activities, engaging in spontaneous prayers, thanksgiving, and worship throughout interactions with others, inviting God’s presence and power to permeated every moment of service (1 Thes 5:17, Col 4:2).

Seventh, we should embark on reflection and gratitude. In other words, we should focus on the faithfulness of God in our lives and in the ministry. We should offer God the worship of thanksgiving and gratitude for all his goodness to us. This kind of prayer is pleasing to God. (Psalm 107:1; Phil 4:6). These are some of the ways we can combine prayer with active ministry.

Prayers

Lord, help us to constantly wait on you for guidance and direction. Lord, give us the gift of prayerfulness in our ministry. Lord, deliver us from the temptation of not creating time to be alone with you. Lord, help us to be men and women of recollection and meditation. Lord, give us the grace to know your will for us in every situation. Lord, please, sustain us till the very end. Wishing you a spirit filled day. With lots of prayers and love.

Wednesday of 1st week in ordinary time, year 1, 2025 Reflection by Fr Collins Akhigbe, OP Scriptural Passages 1st reading.
