SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

REFLECTION BY FR COLLINS AKHIGBE, OP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCRIPTURAL PASSAGES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1ST READING REV 7:2-4, 9-14. PSALM 24. 2ND READING 1 JN 3:1-3. GOSPEL MT 5:1-12.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

THEME: THE SAINTLY LIFE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We celebrate today the Solemnity of All Saints. It is a day we remember all the souls in heaven. They are known as the Church Triumphant. These are men and women who remain faithful till the very end. As we celebrate this day, the Church presents to us the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes reveal first of all the identity of Jesus Christ and then the identity of his disciples. The Lord reveals to us the way to true happiness and ultimate rest. This is the way of the Saints. The way we are all called to embrace. In the reading we are presented with the revelation of the Saints in heaven. While in the second reading we are told that we shall be like God because we shall see him face to face (1 Jn 3:1-3). As we celebrate this day the Church expects us to aim at Sainthood. The Church expects us to imitate the example of the Saints. The Church expects us to have filial devotion to our heavenly ancestors. The Church expects us to fix our gaze in heaven in order to achieve the ultimate goal of life. In this reflection we shall highlight why they became Saints and how to become Saints<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHY THEY BECAME SAINTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, the Saints were men and women who recognized their need of God. They realized that  they cannot do anything without God. As a result they put all their hope and aspirations on Him. They became poor in Spirit because of their absolute trust and dependency on God (Mt 5:3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, the Saints we celebrate today are men and women who recognized that they were sinners in need of mercy. They turned to God for mercy and mercy was given to them. They too became men and women of compassion and mercy (Mt 5:7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, the Saints were men and women who hungered for righteousness. They were on fire for God. They longed for God until they possessed God (Mt 5:6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourth, the souls in heaven become Saints because they wept for their sins. They were truly sorrowful for offending God and their neighbor (Mt 5:4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifth, the Triumphant became Saints because they were humble and docile to the will of God. Like Jesus Christ they submitted willingly to divine providence. Like Jesus Christ they surrendered to God totally (Mt 26:39; Mt 5:5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sixth, the men and women we celebrate today became Saints because they were<\/p>\n\n\n\n

clean of hearts. They purified their souls before the Lord (Mt 5:8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventh, they became Saints because they were peacemakers. They became source of reconciliation like Jesus Christ (Mt 5:9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eighth, the men and women we celebrate today became Triumphant because they went through suffering and persecutions for the sake of Jesus Christ without giving up. They remained faithful even unto death (Mt 5:10).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ninth, they became Saints because of their love of God and of their neighbors. They loved God more than themselves (1 Jn 4:8,16).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HOW CAN WE BECOME SAINTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, we too should recognize our need and dependency on God. We should recognize that we cannot serve God without the help of God. Thus, we should seek for the grace of God in order to achieve eternal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, to arrive safely at our heavenly home we must repent of our sins and be baptized. The Lord told his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations whoever believes and is baptized will be saved (Mk 16:15-16).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, we should walk humbly with God recognizing that we are dust and unto dust we shall return (Gen 2:7). The more we humble ourselves the more we become open to the grace of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourth, to arrive safely at our heavenly home we must have faith, hope and love (1 Cor 13:13). Without faith no one can please God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifth, to arrive safely and become Saints we must live a life of holiness. The scripture tells us, without holiness no one can see the Lord (Heb 12:14).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sixth, if we want to become Saints we must embrace forgiveness and reconciliation. The scripture tells us, if you do not forgive others, your heavenly Father will not forgive you (Mt 6:14).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventh, if we want to become Saints we should of necessity deny ourselves and take up our Cross and follow Jesus Christ. The Master told us, whoever wants to be my disciple must deny himself and take up his Cross and follow me (Mk 8:34). No cross no crown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eighth, to become Saints we must follow the example of Jesus Christ faithfully. In other words, we must mirror Christ in thoughts, words and actions. This is our mission here on earth. We are called to become another Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ninth, to become Saints we must be merciful towards our neighbors. The scripture tells us, Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy (Mt 5:7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The means to overcome temptation and become Saints<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, a life of prayer and devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, constant Vigilance and Watchfulness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, a life of meditation and recollection. We should constantly meditate on the word of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourth, a life of fasting and mortification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifth, making use of the Sacraments of the Church. The Sacraments are powerful moments of grace and holiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sixth, constant fellowship with fellow believers is very helpful in overcoming temptation and sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventh, fill your day with things of God. Reading spiritual books, listening to Gospel music etc..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are some of the means we need to overcome temptation and sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRAYERS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord, help us to love you above all things. Lord, give us the grace of humility and docility. Lord, set us free from pride and arrogance. Lord, help us to be pure in heart. Lord, please, sustain us till the very end. Amen. Wishing you a wonderful feast day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
