SCRIPTURAL PASSAGES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1ST READING 2 MACCABEES 7:1-2, 9-14. PSALM 17. 2ND READING 2 THES 2:16-3:5. GOSPEL LK 20:27-38.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

THEME:  PREPARE FOR YOUR RESURRECTION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“One of them, acting as their spokesman, said, what do you intend to ask and learn from us? For we are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our fathers. And when the second was at his last breath, he said, you accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws” (2 Maccabees 7:2, 9). The dominant theme in today’s readings is Resurrection. We see this in the first reading and the Gospel. As we draw closer to the end of the liturgical year, the Church is drawing our attention on the need to prepare for our own resurrection. The Church is encouraging her children to fix their gaze in heaven where Christ is seated. The heroic witness of a mother and her seven children in today’s first reading is very moving and touching. It demonstrates the great nobility of hearts of those children. They present to us the pathway we too should follow. They preferred to die than to disobey the laws of God. They exchanged this world for eternity. What a glorious example they have given us. In the Gospel reading the Sadducees, who do not believe in the resurrection presented a story of a woman who was married to seven brothers one after the other (Lk 20:27-38). They wanted to justify themselves. In his response, the Lord has this to say, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are accounted worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given to marriage” (Lk 20:34-35). The teaching of resurrection is central to our Christian faith. According to the Church, we are created to be with God forever and ever (PC # 2). This is why it is very critical that we prepare for resurrection. In the second reading, St Paul calls us to prayer. This is one of the ways we can prepare for our resurrection. In this reflection we shall highlight why we should prepare for Resurrection and to prepare for resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHY YOU SHOULD PREPARE FOR YOUR RESURRECTION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, we should prepare for our resurrection because we shall live forever. In today’s Gospel reading, the Lord tells us that God is a God not of the dead but of the living (Lk 20:38).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, we should prepare for the resurrection because this is the will of God for each and everyone of us. The Lord wants us to reign with him forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, we should prepare for the resurrection because there will be judgement. We should remember that we are going to give account of our stewardship. The story of last judgment in the Gospel of Matthew is very instructive here (Mt 25:31-46).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourth, we should prepare for the resurrection because whether we like it or not we shall die one day. The day and the time is uncertain. This is the more reason why we should prepare ourselves for the resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifth, we should prepare ourselves for the resurrection so that we do not miss eternal life. If we are not prepared we would be caught unaware and ultimately lose eternal life. We cannot afford to go to eternal damnation. It is too grievous to take lightly. Unfortunately many people are joking about eternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE RESURRECTION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, the woman and her sons in today’s first reading have given us wonderful example on how to prepare for the resurrection. Obedience to the commandments of God even if it means dying. This is a powerful witness to the Gospel of Christ. The willingness to lay down our lives for Jesus Christ and his Gospel is a wonderful means of preparing for the resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, we can also prepare for the resurrection through repentance and conversion (Joel 2:12-13). We need to turn from evil ways to righteousness. We need to say enough is enough to a life of compromise. We need to be sincere with ourselves and embrace conversion. This is a powerful means of preparing for the resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, we can also prepare for the resurrection by depending on divine providence. This means, we place all our hope and confidence in Jesus Christ. We depend on him like little children depend on their parents. Blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Mt 5:3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourth, we prepare for the resurrection by living a life of faith, hope and charity (1 Cor 13:13). Living a life of virtue is a sure way to prepare for eternity. It is a powerful means to prepare for the resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifth, when we walk humbly and gently with God we become capable of overcoming temptation and sin. Humble life prepares us for eternity. The more humble we become the more likely we shall make it to heaven. Humble disposition is a great means we can prepare for the resurrection. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land (Mt 5:5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sixth, when we hunger for God we grow in holiness and integrity. The sincere and deep yearning for God is capable of saving us from temptations and sin. The Psalmist has this to say, “O God, you are my God. It is you I seek! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts, in a land parched, lifeless, and without water” (Psalm 63:2). This kind of hunger sustains a soul unto everlasting life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventh, another means through which we can prepare ourselves for the resurrection is through a life of forgiveness and reconciliation (Mt 18:21-34). This also involves showing mercy to those in need of mercy. Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy (Mt 5:7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eighth, a life of purity and holiness is a powerful means through which we can prepare for the resurrection. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God (Mt 5:8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ninth, a life of prayer and devotion is very important in our preparation for the resurrection. The Master told us to watch and pray for the Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak (Mt 26:41). The more we remain on our knees the more we are capable of growing in holiness and virtue. Without the grace of God we cannot achieve eternity. Since prayer is a powerful moment of grace we cannot but be on our knees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tenth, when we promote the kingdom of Christ through our lives and our lips we become candidates for heaven. This is one of the means of preparing for the resurrection. When we through our lives and actions draw people to heaven we become candidates for heaven ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are some of the ways we can prepare for the resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRAYERS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lord, help us to be ready at all times. Lord, give us the Spirit of vigilance and watchfulness. Lord, help us to overcome temptation and sin. Lord, heal us of our wounds and weaknesses. Lord, please, sustain us till the very end. Amen. Wishing you a beautiful Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
