PSALM 23. 2ND READING ROM 5:5-7. GOSPEL LK 7:11-17.

THEME: PREPARE FOR DEATH

The Church today celebrates the souls in purgatory. The Church asks us to remember those who have died but are not yet united with God. They are known as the Suffering Church. According to the teaching of the Church, purgatory is meant for perfect purification of souls. The existence of purgatory is a necessity by virtue of the justice of God. In other words, purgatory is meant to satisfy the justice of God. There is punishment due to every sin committed on earth. The sin may have been forgiven but there is need for purification and atonement for the sins committed. In the first reading we are told that the soul of the righteous are in the hands of God, no torment shall touch them (Wisdom 3:1). The apostle Paul tells us in the second reading how we have been reconciled with God through the suffering and death of Christ (Rom 5:6-8). In the Gospel we see the compassion of Jesus towards the poor widow by raising her son back to life (Lk 7:11-17). As we celebrate the souls in purgatory today the Church expects us to prepare for our own death. In this reflection we shall examine why we should prepare for death and how to prepare for death.

WHY WE SHOULD PREPARE FOR DEATH

First, one of the most basic and certain realities is death. We all know that death is inevitable but we often forget to prepare for it. Since death is a must, it is proper and right that we prepare for it.

Second, it is the will of God that we prepare for death. The Lord does not want anyone to perish but that all should embrace repentance (2 Peter 3:9).

Third, another reason why we should prepare for death is because it will happen at a time we do not expect. One can die in the night while sleeping. One can die in a car accident. One can slump and pass away while walking on the road. Death can take place anywhere and anytime. This is the stack reality we face daily.

Fourth, we should prepare for death because it is for our own good and safety. Preparation for death will save us from eventuality. It will lead us to inner peace and harmony. The more we prepare for death the more we are most likely going to be at peace.

Fifth, we should prepare for death because of the second coming of Jesus Christ. We are expecting Jesus to come anytime. We cannot face judgement if we are not prepared. It will become a day of terror and fear because of failure to prepare for death.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR DEATH

First, we should reconcile with God and with one another. This is very important for our Salvation on the last day. Without forgiveness and reconciliation we cannot see God.

Second, we can prepare for death through repentance and conversion. We should turn away from sinful habits. We should be remorseful over our weaknesses and shortcomings. The Lord expects us to repent and embrace the Gospel (Mt 4:17).

Third, we can also prepare for death by living a life of obedience. The Master told us, if you love me you keep my commandments (Jn 14:15). This is a beautiful way to prepare for a holy death.

Fourth, when we show mercy on others we prepare for our own death. Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy (Mt 5:7).

Fifth, living a life of purity of heart is very important in our preparation for death. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God (Mt 5:8).

Sixth, a life of virtue and integrity will ultimately lead us to heaven. We should strive to live a life of faith, hope and love (1 Cor 13:13). The pathway of virtue is a powerful means of preparing for death.

Seventh, we can also prepare for death by standing for truth and fairness. A life of truthfulness will save us on the last day. The Master told us, you will know the truth and the truth will set you free (Jn 8:32).

Eighth, another means to prepare for death is through personal union with the Lord. To dwell in fellowship and communion with Christ is salvific. The more we draw closer to Jesus Christ the better prepared we become.

Ninth, in order to prepare for death we should make use of the Sacraments. The Sacrament of Baptism is the gateway. We should regularly go to confession. This is a powerful moment of grace and Salvation. The worthy reception of the body and blood of Christ is salvific and redemptive.

Tenth, living a life of humility and docility is a powerful means to prepare for death. The scripture tells us that God resists the proud but bestows favours on the humble (1 Peter 5:5).

These are some of the ways we can prepare for death.

PRAYERS

Lord, help us to overcome temptation and sin. Lord, give us the grace of humility and simplicity. Lord, deliver us from sinful habits. Lord, Please, have mercy on the souls in purgatory. Amen. Wishing you a peaceful day.

With lots of prayers and love.

MEMORIAL OF ALL SOULS REFLECTION BY FR COLLINS AKHIGBE, OP SCRIPTURAL PASSAGES 1ST READING WISDOM 3:1-9.
